True Story: Communication is Key

True story. Real life update.

We have recently had the experience of being customers. Because we are also people and we have stuff going on. We have two rental properties that had long term tenants leave at the same time… while leaving the properties empty for several weeks giving us the rare opportunity to do some upgrades beyond the standard paint touch up and carpet cleaning and let’s make sure you didn’t leave any socks in the dryer. (All of that still happened though).

In a 2 week period we had a total of 14 different service providers in the 2 different properties. One group was our window installers and one group was Steve doing a variety of tasks as he could so we’ll skip them. Twelve other contractors scheduled to come in and do work with a tight deadline because the next tenants have a strict move in date. Guess how many times a contractor contacted me between agreement to perform the work and showing up for the install? THREE. The other 9 required me contacting them (multiple times) to make sure we were on schedule. Me contacting them to confirm the install date. Me contacting them the day of the install to request an arrival window - or worse - frustrated that they just randomly showed up and couldn’t get in. Me, every day on call and on standby waiting to see what would happen and when. And every single one is someone either referred to us by a trusted friend or someone we already had a relationship with. Can you imagine if they were all blind relationships? We are at the finish line now. The work performed by all of these people has been impeccable. All except one adhered to the tight schedule. No one rescheduled and they stayed late or worked on the weekend if needed to finish their part before the next crew came in.

The experience was just a reminder to me that being a contractor means it is crucially important to communicate the details. It is valuable beyond measure to not stress out the person holding the checkbook. It is a gift to keep communication open, to share what will happen and when, and to truly be a partner in whatever project is happening. When you It really isn’t even that hard. It is, really and truly, AS important as the work that is being performed.

Does this mean we will always work under your schedule? No. Does it mean you will never panic? Also no. Getting work done on your home is stressful and panic is a part of that.
