Storm Damage Checklist

Hail. Wind. So destructive.

If you’ve had a storm rip through your neighborhood then you know first hand what that damage looks like. If the storm was recent your head might be spinning as to what the process is and what you’re supposed to do next.

This blog post is not going to be a long story, it’s going to be more of a checklist for you so you feel like you know what you’re doing.

  1. Determine if you have enough damage to start an insurance claim. If you’re not sure, you can call Steve for a consultation/confirmation of damage.

  2. Call your insurance company and start a claim.

  3. They will send an insurance adjuster out to identify the exact damage to your home so they can create your settlement. Ideally Steve can be there with the adjuster to go through damage and make sure the claim is as complete as possible.

    • NOTE: You do NOT need to get quotes from roofers or siders on how much it will cost. Your insurance company will give you their best estimate based on the materials and the market.

  4. You wait for the claim to be emailed to you.

  5. You send the claim to Steve.

  6. Steve reviews each claim for completeness. Sometimes items may be forgotten or certain items of damage might not be included.

    • If the claim looks incomplete Steve will work directly with the insurance company to get all items included and get you an updated claim that covers all damage.

    • If the claim looks good, Steve can schedule the work.

  7. Steve will order materials, order the dumpster, get the building permit, and schedule the labor and then complete all the work under the claim.

  8. Once the work is complete Steve will provide written notice of completed work to the insurance company, who will then send you a final check.

  9. You will cash that check and then write a new check to Steve for the completed work.

  10. All work contracts for storm damage are written “for insurance proceeds” rather than for a specific number. Therefore when the work under the claim is completed, we get paid the totals listed in the claim.

SO WHEN DO YOU SIGN A WORK CONTRACT?

Easy. As soon as you know that Steve is who you want to do the work. Most people wait until the claim is received because it feels real then. It’s a quick meeting for Steve to create a materials list and for you to make your color selections.

The total will simply be "FOR INSURANCE PROCEEDS” and will not be a dollar amount. The standard practice for down payment is the amount of your insurance claim deductible.
