Best Windows for Noise Reduction

Woman experiencing headache from outdoor noise.

Windows play a critical role in the transmission of sound that enters your home. But over time, older windows start to lose their noise barrier. The reason?

Well, there may be a few explanations for why you're experiencing an  increase in noise pollution:

  • Old Sealing: One possible explanation is that the seals around your windows have deteriorated over time, allowing the insulating gas to escape. Without that insulating barrier, it's easier for sound to get through.

  • Single-Pane Windows: If your older windows use single-pane glass, they do not provide any protection against noise or energy loss.

Regardless of the reason, replacing your old windows with energy-efficient triple-pane windows will enhance your home's sound barrier, allowing you to maintain a comfortable and quiet living environment.

So, to answer the question…

What are the best windows for noise reduction?

Simply put, investing in triple-pane windows will offer your home an effective sound barrier. Additionally, they'll help keep drafty air and outdoor temperatures where they belong, allowing you to improve your home's comfort and energy efficiency.
Why is triple-pane glass best for noise reduction?

In a triple pane window, there are 3 sheets of glass with two distinct chambers filled with Argon or Krypton.

Because gas is a much denser material than air, sound waves have a harder time passing through it. Therefore, triple-pane windows effectively create multiple sound barriers between the outside and the inside of your home.

Triple-pane windows are an upgrade, so it's common for families to install them only on the side of the home near the road, a school, or a noisy railroad track. By installing a sound-barrier on the side of the home that experiences the most noise, homeowners can  then install double-pane windows throughout the rest of the house.

How to reduce noise from outside

In addition to replacing old single-pane windows with triple-pane, there are a few other ways to help reduce noise from outside:

  • Add weatherstripping to doors and windows to help seal gaps and prevent sound from entering the home.

  • Add insulation to walls and ceilings to help reduce noise, or consider using sound-absorbing materials such as acoustic panels or carpets.

  • Plant trees or install a sound barrier fence to help reduce outside noise.
