Window Maintenance: Top 4 Ways to Maintain Windows in an Afternoon

Window maintenance. So fun to talk about!

Yesterday we had our family day…  the day we set aside one time a month to play together.  We cancelled all of the plans we started with and chose to stay home. Three guesses what Steve the Window Guy ended up doing.  What?  You guessed wash windows?   CORRECT!!

After finishing the task he came inside to give us the rundown.   Exterior caulking is coming loose,   wood frames are starting to rot,  some locking mechanisms are broken and unattached…  his mental list of household tasks started to grow.  I tell you all of this not to illustrate a case of the cobblers kids who don’t have any shoes but to identify what sorts of things can happen when you slow down and really spend some time paying attention to your home.

I think we all  have dream lists for our home… the big projects like a new kitchen,  all new interior paint or finally finishing that basement space.  I also think we all have very task oriented lists for our home that we never get to… like clean the garage, fix the recycling drawer,  hang hooks in the hall closet.  But the lists that need the most attention are not always the shiny ones..  they aren’t the ones that you can show off to your friends or brag about on facebook. They are the ones that just need to be done and that you will always feel good about doing.  They are the maintenance ones.

To that end..  here are our top 4 window maintenance tasks that you can complete this week:

  1. Remove all window screens and  label them.   Either use some tape or write directly on to the top frame of the screen which window it goes back into.  (You’ll thank yourself later).

  2. Clean your window screens.  The upholstery attachment on your vaccumm is great for this.   If it is nice out you can just take them outside and hose then down or watch them with soapy water and a rag or brush.

  3. If you notice any damage or (cringe) create any damage to your screens in this process you can bring then to a local hardware store to get repaired or call a mobile repair service like Screen Medic or Screen Mobile.

  4. With a damp cloth clean the inside frame and sash.  While you are up close and personal make a mental note of any maintenance your windows need.  It isn’t uncommon to need to re-caulk them to ensure water can’t get in to the frame.  You can buy caulk at any hardware or big box store.   Choose a color that will blend in to your home exterior or buy a clear caulking.

So there you have it. A quick afternoon spent on your windows can give you a headstart on spring cleaning, can get you better organized for the future, can identify and problems or can help you identify when it might be time to get them replaced.

We will continue to take appointments for in home estimates for as long as we can, at which point we will transition to virtual appointments. We believe relationships are more important than transactions. There are ways we can provide you with information and begin the process of window replacement remotely.
